Review wraps up! 43,000 entries submitted to the 2023 “Colorful World” International Youth Painting Invitational Exhibition

The call for entries for the 2023 “Colorful World” International Youth Painting Invitational Exhibition has wrapped up. To date, close to 43,000 entries from both home and abroad have been received, including works from China’s 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and those from 60 foreign countries such as Argentina, Australia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Russia, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The review process lasted half a month and consisted of three rounds. The first round was conducted online by a jury composed of 70 frontline art teachers, who selected more than 2,000 entries.

The second round was conducted by an expert panel composed of Yin Shaochun, professor and doctoral supervisor at Capital Normal University and member of the Art Education Committee of the Ministry of Education, Zheng Qinyan, professor and doctoral supervisor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the First National Primary and Secondary School Aesthetic Education Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Qiao Xiaoguang, professor and doctoral supervisor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and “Six Arts Scholar” of Shandong University of Art and Design, and Wei Guangjun, Director of the Seal Cutting Institute of China National Academy of Painting, President of Jinghua Seal Engravers’ Society and doctoral supervisor. They shortlisted 280 entries from foreign youngsters and 1,300 entries from Chinese youngsters.

In the process of review, the experts spoke highly of this year’s exhibition, praising its focus on the inheritance and preservation of cultural heritage of global concern, as well as its big vision and broad perspective. The experts believe that the theme of the paintings accords with the characteristics of youths, and the entries cover a wide range of topics, take diverse forms, feature dynamic techniques, and are truly infectious, imaginative and artistic.

 

Message from experts

Professor Yin Shaochun thought that the young participants created their works based on their own lives and an in-depth analysis of relevant materials to vividly present world cultural heritage, which are truly impressive. Professor Zheng Qinyan said that the youngsters’ works stand out to the judges with their solid painting skills, unbridled imagination and pristine brushstrokes. Professor Qiao Xiaoguang noted that the young participants present their observation, feelings and imagination of world cultural heritage in the forms of paper-cutting and painting, and the entries are imbuing with surprise elements artistically. According to President Wei Guangjun, the entries feature varied forms of expression from line drawing and colorful painting and have aesthetic appeal in terms of sensibility and composition, making themselves pleasing to the eye.

The third round of review was conducted by a final review committee composed of experts from the hosts and organizers, including the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the Beijing Municipal Cultural Heritage Bureau, China National Film Museum, the Beijing NGO Association for International Exchanges, Intercontinental Communication Center, China Literature and Art Foundation Campus Culture Special Fund, Beijing Minhe Foundation for International Exchanges, and the Organizing Committee of Bimo China. After evaluating the entries from artistic and ideological perspectives, the final review committee determined the winners of the first, second and third prizes.

The organizing committee will announce the winners and then publish the name list on the exhibition’s official website, WeChat official account, the special section on xuexi.cn, and the WeChat official accounts of the hosts. The online and offline exhibition and award ceremony will take place at the end of October. Stay tuned!
