Stories of Foreign Friends

The Communist Party of China (CPC) was founded in 1921 when the Chinese nation suffered domestic turmoil, foreign aggression, and unprecedented social crisis. The birth of the CPC was a seismic event for the Chinese nation. Under the leadership of the CPC, the long-suffering Chinese people fought arduously and realized majestic epic achievements.

In addition to the Chinese people who rallied behind the CPC to fight dauntlessly and arduously in the stirring centennial history of the CPC, many foreign friends sympathized with the Chinese people’s suffering, identified with China’s path of development, and stood resolutely side by side with the CPC through thick and thin.

Among them are Norman Bethune, a great internationalist soldier; Augustin Bussiere, who opened the Bike Hump; Edgar Snow, who was the first Western journalist to hold interviews at the CPC-related zones; Rewi Alley, father of the industrial cooperative movement; Shafick George Hatem, a pioneer in China’s health sector; Isabel Crook, a trailblazer of English education in the PRC; Israel Epstein, a media worker who loved China; Erwin Engst and his wife Joan Hinton, who were committed to the agricultural and animal husbandry development in China. These remarkable names, like monuments of friendship, are etched in the history of the CPC and had also built bridges of communication between China and the rest of the world.

On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the CPC, the exhibition “A Century of Friendship towards a Shared Future, Communist Party of China and Foreign Friends” was officially launched on May 11. It was organized by the Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, China Society for People’s Friendship Studies, and the International Committee for the Promotion of Chinese Industrial Cooperatives, and sponsored by China International Publishing Group, Department of Overseas Intellectual Resources Cooperation under the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC, and the Local Chronicles Office Subordinate to the CPC History Research Office of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee.

The exhibition covers the stories of 88 foreign friends during the period of the new democratic revolution, the period of socialist revolution and development, and the period since the reform and opening-up. It describes the touching stories between them and the Chinese Communists to recall the great friendship between foreign friends and the CPC, and pay tribute to the foreign friends who made outstanding contributions to China’s revolution, development, and reform.

The centennial CPC is in its prime, and it is still necessary to march towards the future regardless of hardships. An open China and a colorful Beijing welcome peace-loving friends from around the world with open arms. Let us face the future and work together to build a community with a shared future for mankind, and build an open, inclusive, clean, and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity!
